How to set goals (On and Off the Golf Course)

gv
With reference to my last post; “HOW A DYSLEXIC LIKE ME, TAKES NOTES TO ORGANIZE AND REMEMBER EVERYTHING.” I found one of my first notes ever taken using the system I explained in the post, which I wanted to share with you.I have set goals ever since I can remember. I have to work towards something, that I know what the end goal is. Some goals take months if not years to decide on what I want to concentrate my time on. This element of setting goals has always been a hurdle for me. So this is a layout, that will help you apply a timeline to your goals. Can you name the book it has come from?

Dream Lining: The Application of Timelines to Dreams.

The protocol:

  • Takes ambiguous wants and defined steps.
  • The goals have to be unrealistic to be effective.
  • What would you do if  you could not fail if you were 10 times smarter than the rest of the world.
  • If you can’t think of anything put down what you hate or fear and do the opposite. Do not judge/ fall yourself.
  • Set 3 to 6-month dream lines.

Let’s begin. Fill out the following: I have filled in some as examples.

1. Having – List 5 things you wish to “have/own”

1.
2. House/ beach chalet in Hawaii.
3.
4.
5.

2. Being: What does “Being” entail “doing.”

Convert each being into a  Doing to make it actionable.  Identify an action that would character this state of being or task that you would have achieved it. This Colum is just temporary holding spot for just doing actions. ie Great cook —-> Make Christmas dinner with no help. Fluent in Chinese —-> Having a 5 min conversation with a Chinese person.

1.
2. Iron Man Athlete ——-> Create a 4-month training schedule. Call a local trainer. Run 5k by Friday.
3.
4.
5.

The only tattoo's I would ever get. The Olympic rings and this baby.

The only tattoo’s I would ever get. The Olympic rings and this baby. Have to achieve both first.

 3. Doing – Doing is better than having.Consider the question: What would you do, day-to-day, if you had $100 million in the bank? What would make you most excited about waking up to another day? Fill out below:
1.
2.
3.
4. Learn how to play the piano.
5. Play Pebble Beach Golf Club
Late night jam sessions in North Carolina, 2013.

Hitting a Blank? More Ideas….Remember: If you can’t think of anything put down what you hate or fear and do the opposite. Do not judge/ fall yourself.
  • 1 place to visit: Virgin Islands
  • 1 thing to do before you die (a memory of a lifetime): Play Augusta Country Club
  • 1 thing to do daily: Read a book.
  • 1 thing to do weekly:
  • 1 thing you’ve always wanted to learn: Dancing, Chess.

4. What are the four dreams that would change it all.

In order, what are the 4 dreams that would change it all. Highlight the most exciting or important.

1. ( What would yours be?)
2.
3.
4.

5. DETERMINE the Cost of your dreams and Calculate your TMI (total monthly Income.)

If financeable what is the cost per month for each of the four dreams.  Rent mortgage payment pans ect.
Start thinking of income and expense in terms of monthly cash flow. Dollars in and dollars out. Instead of grand totals, things often cost less than you think eg Aston Martin DB9 – $136,000 or $2003 per month.

6. Calculate your TMI for realising these dream lines.

First total each of the columns 12,3, and 4. The only selected dreams. Some of these may be zero.
Calculate cost of each of the four columns.
Times you monthly expenses x 1.3 (1.3 represents a 30% buffer for savings/ emergency.)
The grand total is your TMI. If you divide this figure by 30 you get your TDI- Target daily income. I find it easy to have a daily goal.

7. Determine 3 steps for the four dreams and take the first step now.

This process is about defining the end goal, then build a required vehicle to achieve it, TMI, TDI and build momentum with critical first steps.

Define 3 steps for each dream, that will get you closer to its actualization. Set actions, simple well-defined actions.

Goal 1.
Now ————> (Fill in yours here)
Tomorrow ——->
Day after ——–>
(Complete before 10am)

Goal 2.
Now ————>
Tomorrow ——->
Day after ——–>
(Complete before 10am)

Goal 3.
Now ————> Iron Man Athlete
Tomorrow ——-> Call trainer and get in contact with an Iron Man Athlete. Order supplements.
Day after ——–> Create week one workout routine.
(Complete before 10am)

Goal 4
Now ————>
Tomorrow ——->
Day after ——–>
(Complete before 10am)

Once you have three steps for each of the four goals. Complete the actions you set in the NOW COLUM and do it now. Each should be simple to do in 5 mins or less. If not bring it down. Ie if it is research – get in touch with someone who knows the answers. Ever task should take no longer than 5 mins.

Do not create extra work for yourself. Find someone who has done it and find out how. It’s not hard, set a meeting, a phone call. Or if it is the middle of the night and you need to call someone, send an email and schedule the call.

Conclusion

That is “The Art of Dreamlining,” and how the note system works. Step four of the note taking system is where everything you have learned ties back in, to lessons that stick. Adding your notes into Evernote, means all that information is accessible where ever you are in the world.
